Three New Elementary Shools

With increasing rigor in the state-mandated curriculum, our students deserve appropriate teaching and learning spaces and tools.  It’s time to replace the five aging and outdated elementary schools with three new energy-efficient buildings with storm shelters, modern teaching and learning tools and spaces, and every minute of teaching and learning.

Keep Our Teachers & Kids Safe

Protect our teachers and students from modern-day threats.  New elementary schools are built with state-of-the art safety and security features including access card reader systems, central lockdown capability, and storm shelters.  New secure entrances at DJH and DHS, new interior LED lighting at all schools,  and perimeter fencing at DISD.

Energy Efficient Upgrades & Kitchen Renovations

The average age of a building in DISD is 53 years old and our elementary schools are 62  years old. Older buildings cost more to operate and maintain over time. Replacing end-of-life HVAC units and installing a district-wide energy management system along with LED lighting in all buildings decreases operating costs, putting more money back into the classroom each year. It’s also time to renovate kitchens at DHS and DJHS to remove Abestos and eliminate ongoing plumbing and draining problems.

Provide Space for Growing Fine Arts Programs

Our Fine Arts building was built 1975 for 80 students, with one restroom, and no ADA access to the second floor. Today, our award-winning band has doubled in size to over 150 students and the space is overcrowded. Renovation includes a larger band hall, new practice rooms, choir rooms, adequate restrooms, ADA accessibility and storage space for uniforms and equipment.

Expand Career & Technology Programs

The current building is over capacity, lacks appropriate ventilation, and has to share space with Ag classes. The district has to turn away over 40 students each year from the Welding program. New building at DHS will house Welding classroom, shop and equipment with extra space for Construction Trades program. Ag Science program will have dedicated space in the existing shop.
